Date Difference Calculator

Count the time between two dates in days, weeks and months, with a separate weekday-only total for working out business days.

Your data never leaves your browser. This tool runs entirely on your device.

Choose a start date and an end date.

Inclusive or exclusive counting

This calculator counts the days between two dates, not including the end date. From 1 March to 8 March is 7 days.

Some contexts count both endpoints — a hotel booking from the 1st to the 8th is 7 nights but touches 8 calendar days, and holiday entitlement is usually counted inclusively. If you need the inclusive figure, add one.

1 March → 8 March = 7 days (exclusive)
                    = 8 days (inclusive)

Weekdays and working days

The weekday total counts Monday to Friday and excludes Saturdays and Sundays. It does not know about public holidays, which vary by country and region, so subtract those yourself for a true working-day count.

Note also that not every country treats Saturday and Sunday as the weekend — much of the Middle East uses Friday and Saturday.

Why months are ambiguous

Days and weeks are fixed units, so those totals are exact. Months are not: they range from 28 to 31 days, so "how many months" depends on which months the span covers.

The years, months and days breakdown counts against the real calendar. The total-months figure counts complete calendar months only, discarding the leftover days.

Daylight saving and time zones

All arithmetic is done in UTC, so daylight saving cannot affect the result. A calculation done in local time would count 30 days across a spring transition where there are really 31, because one of those days is only 23 hours long.

Frequently asked questions

How many days are between two dates?

Subtract the earlier date from the later one, counting whole days and excluding the end date. From 1 March to 8 March is 7 days. Add one if you need to count both endpoints.

Does the weekday count exclude public holidays?

No. It excludes Saturdays and Sundays only, because public holidays differ by country and region. Subtract the holidays that apply to you for a true working-day total.

Why does the month count seem inconsistent?

Because months vary between 28 and 31 days. The breakdown counts complete calendar months and shows the leftover days separately, rather than dividing by an average month length.

Does it handle leap years?

Yes. Leap days are counted like any other day, so a span crossing 29 February includes it. 2024 has 366 days between 1 January 2024 and 1 January 2025.

Can the end date be before the start date?

Yes. The totals are reported as positive numbers and the result notes that the end date is earlier, so you can measure backwards without swapping the fields.
