French Anagram Solver

Enter your letters and see every French word they spell, best score first — anagrams that use the whole rack, and the shorter words hiding inside it.

Your data never leaves your browser. This tool runs entirely on your device.

Up to 15 tiles. Use ? for a blank.

A French dictionary, not an English one

This searches a 311,495-word French list: conjugations, plurals and feminines included, which is what makes it usable mid-game rather than only for dictionary forms. Typing English letters here will mostly find nothing.

If you want English words instead, the word unscrambler is the same tool over the ENABLE English list, with English tile values.

Accents are ignored, exactly as on the board

French Scrabble tiles carry no accents: É is played as E, and there is no Œ tile — the ligature is spelled with two. The dictionary here is folded the same way, so ÉCOLE is matched by five plain tiles.

That means you can type your letters however you like. "école", "ecole" and "ECOLE" are one and the same rack, and so are "cœur" and "coeur".

French tile values are not the English ones

The distributions differ because the languages do. K, W, X and Y are worth 10 in French rather than 5, 4, 8 and 4; M drops from 3 to 2, and Q from 10 to 8. Scoring a French rack on an English scale gets the ranking wrong, so this tool uses the French values.

  • 1 point — A, E, I, N, O, R, S, T, U, L
  • 2 points — D, G, M
  • 3 points — B, C, P
  • 4 points — F, H, V
  • 8 points — J, Q
  • 10 points — K, W, X, Y, Z

Anagrams and the words hiding inside them

A true anagram uses every letter you have. CHIEN has three — CHIEN, CHINE and NICHE — but those five letters also make 18 words in total, and in a real game the shorter ones are usually what fits.

Both are shown. Results are grouped by length, longest first, and ticking "use every tile" narrows them to the anagrams alone.

Which word list this uses

The list is the MIT-licensed an-array-of-french-words, itself derived from the Letterpress French word list, filtered here to words of 2 to 15 letters — 15 being the length of a board line.

It is not the ODS, the list French tournaments adjudicate on. The ODS is copyrighted and cannot be redistributed, so no free tool ships it. The overlap is wide but not total: expect a handful of differences at the edges, mostly among two- and three-letter words.

Nothing you type is uploaded

The word list is downloaded once, on your first search, and every search after that runs inside your browser. Your letters are never sent anywhere, and the tool keeps working if your connection drops.

Frequently asked questions

Do I need to type the accents?

No, and it makes no difference if you do. Scrabble tiles are unaccented, so the dictionary is folded to plain letters: é, è and ê all match e, ç matches c, and the ligature œ counts as the two tiles o and e.

Is this the ODS dictionary?

No. The ODS is the official list for French tournament play and it is copyrighted, so no free tool can redistribute it. This uses an MIT-licensed French word list that overlaps it heavily without being identical — check anything unusual before playing it in a rated game.

How do I enter a blank tile?

Type a question mark for each blank you hold. The solver tries every letter it could stand for, and draws the covered letter dotted in the results because a blank always scores zero.

What is the difference between an anagram and a sub-word?

An anagram uses every letter of your rack; a sub-word uses only some of them. Both are listed by default, grouped by length. Tick "use every tile" to see the anagrams on their own.

Will the score match what I get on the board?

Only on a bare square. The figure shown is the sum of the French tile values, before any double or triple letter and word squares, and before the 50-point bonus for playing all seven of your tiles at once.

Why is a word I know missing?

Word-game lists leave out proper nouns, abbreviations, hyphenated words and anything needing an apostrophe. This one also stops at 15 letters, since that is the longest word a board can hold.
